London Tests of English for Children

These tests are designed to be interesting and fun for young learners and they aim to make a child’s first experience of learning English, memorable and motivating.

Firstwords

Who is this test for?

This test is for young learners, who have just started learning English in primary school or at a private language institute. 

The aim is primarily to test the learners’ ability to use the language communicatively rather than to test their knowledge of the language system. 


How is this test structured?

The test consists of a ONE-hour paper which tests Listening, Reading and to a small degree, Writing.  The tasks in the test feature the Brown family and include among other related topics, the following:

  • Families
  • Pets
  • School
  • The Body and People’s appearance


Listening Tasks

The children will listen to two passages and will be required to perform the following tasks:

  • Listen to a conversation and draw a line from a name of a person or a thing to a picture of a person or a thing.  
  • Listen to a conversation and put a cross (x) in the box under the correct picture for each question.


Reading and Writing Tasks

The children will be required to perform the following tasks:

  • Matching questions and answers in a conversation by drawing a line between each question and answer.
  • Matching sentences to pictures by drawing a line from each sentence to a picture.
  • Matching pictures of objects to the word denoting the picture by drawing a line between them.
  • Write the missing words in a short text by choosing the right words from a list.


Speaking

The children will be tested in class by an external assessor.  They will be asked to participate in a board game and an individual activity.

Springboard

Who is this test for?

This test is designed to motivate young learners, who have just started learning English in primary school or a private language institution.  It may be suitable as a beginners’ exam for learners who are already familiar with the Latin script or who are working at a faster pace.

The aim is primarily to test the learners’ ability to use the language communicatively rather than to test their knowledge of the language system. 


How is this test structured?

The test consists of a ONE-hour paper, which tests Listening, Reading and Writing.  The tasks in the test feature the Brown family and include some of the following topics:

  • Clothes
  • Food
  • Animals
  • Homes
  • Families
  • Pets
  • School
  • The Body and People’s Appearance

The children will listen to two short passages and will be required to perform the following tasks:

  • Listen to a conversation and draw a line from a name of a person or a thing to a picture of a person or thing.
  • Listen to a conversation and put a cross (X) in the box under the correct picture for each question.


Reading and Writing Task

The children will be required to perform the following tasks:

  • Read a short conversation and write in the missing questions.
  • From two lists, match the words forming the start of a sentence with the words forming the end of the sentence by connecting them with a line.
  • Put in the missing words in a short text by choosing the appropriate word from a list.
  • Extended writing.
  • Write short responses to given questions.

The children will be tested in class by an external assessor.  They will be asked to participate in a board game and an individual activity.

Quickmarch

Who is this test for?

This test is designed to motivate young learners who have achieved a basic level of English at Primary or Lower Secondary school or in a private language school. 

The aim is primarily to test the learners’ ability to use the language communicatively rather than to test their knowledge of the language system. 


How is this test structured?

The Quickmarch test consists of a ONE-hour paper, which tests Listening, Reading and Writing.  The tasks in the tests feature the Brown family and include some of the following topics:

  • Spare time
  • Time
  • Places
  • Food
  • Family
  • Animals
  • Pets
  • Homes
  • School
  • The Body and People’s Appearance
  • Clothes    


Listening Tasks

Candidates will listen to two passages and will be required to perform the following tasks:

  • Listen to a conversation and put a cross (X) in the box under the correct picture for each answer.
  • Listen to a conversation and write a short answer to the questions.


Reading and Writing Tasks

Candidates will be required to perform the following tasks:

  • Read a short conversation and write in the missing questions.
  • Matching pictures and text by drawing a line between the picture and the appropraite text for that picture.
  • Put in the missing verbs in a short text by choosing the appropriate verb from a list and putting it into the past tense.
  • Write short responses to given prompts.

The children will be tested in class by an external assessor.  They will be asked to participate in a board game and an individual activity.

Breakthrough

Who is this test for?

This test is designed to motivate young learners who have achieved an elementary command of English.  The Breakthrough exam includes all elements of the Firstwords, Springboard and Quickmarch syllabuses.  Learners at this level who are aged 14 or over, may prefer to do the London Test of English Level-1.


How is this test structured?

The test consists of a single paper that lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes and tests Listening, Reading and Writing.  The tasks in the test feature the Brown family and include some of the following topics:

  • The Senses
  • Space
  • Nature
  • Autobiographies
  • Families
  • Spare time
  • Clothes
  • Time
  • School
  • The Body and Appearance
  • Homes
  • Animals and Pets
  • Places


Listening Tasks

Candidates will listen to two passages and will be required to perform the following tasks:

  • Listen to a conversation and put a cross (X) in the box under the correct picture for each answer.
  • Listen to a conversation and write a short answer to the questions.


Integrated Language Tasks

Candidates will be required to perform the following tasks:

  • Read a short conversation and write in the missing questions.
  • Match pictures and text by drawing a line between the picture and the appropriate text for that picture.
  • Put into a short text the missing words using words of their own choice.


Writing Tasks

Candidates will be required to write 80-100 words on one of the following:

  • A narrative based on picture prompts.
  • A postcard


Speaking

The children will be tested in class by an external assessor.  They will be asked to participate in a board game and an individual activity.

The tests are created around the everyday adventures of the Brown Family.

Children are tested on their ability to use structures and functions in realistic contexts and, later on in the series, on their ability to use language to carry out specific communicative tasks.
